About this book
Broke after a swindler wrecked his finances and dying of throat cancer, Ulysses S. Grant spent his final months writing to keep his family from ruin. The result is one of the great American memoirs: a plainspoken, unglamorous account of his boyhood, his service in the Mexican-American War, and above all his command of the Union armies through the Civil War. Grant writes about strategy, mistakes, and the men around him with the same clear, unshowy honesty, finishing the manuscript days before his death in 1885. Mark Twain published it, and it earned the fortune Grant hoped for while winning lasting praise as a model of military writing. This complete edition gathers both volumes.
