About this book
State of the Union Addresses, credited to Ulysses S. Grant, gathers addresses dated from December 6, 1869 to December 5, 1876. One address says the United States schooner Lizzie Major was arrested on the high seas by a Spanish frigate, and two passengers were taken from it and carried as prisoners to Cuba, and that the two passengers were set at liberty. Another address raises the subject of an interoceanic canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Isthmus of Darien.
One address mentions the State of New York, with a canal connecting Lake Erie with tide water on the Hudson River, and the State of Illinois, with a similar work connecting Lake Michigan with navigable water on the Illinois River. One address calls cheap transportation a subject that has attracted the attention of both producers and consumers for the past few years.
