About this book

A weary man returns to his study on a winter night and discovers a small ghost with a cold. In the seven cantos of the title poem, Lewis Carroll gives his spectral visitor the worries of a polite guest: proper introductions, refreshments, rank and the cost of wings. The conversation turns a winter evening in a study into a comic account of ghostly society, with everyday manners governing the supernatural.

First published in 1869, this verse collection also includes shorter poems built around friendship, conversation and verbal mischief. In “A Valentine,” the speaker debates whether affection requires constant sorrow between visits. “The Three Voices” begins with a blown-away hat, an umbrella and an uncomfortable exchange about dinner. Readers interested in how rhyme can reshape ordinary social encounters will find Carroll working through small incidents, exaggerated feelings and sharply differing voices.
