About this book

Phases of Irish History is by Eoin MacNeill, who is named as Professor of Ancient Irish History in the National University of Ireland. The foreword says the twelve chapters in the volume, delivered as lectures before public audiences in Dublin, make no pretence to form a full course. The contents list names, among others, the chapters The Five Fifths of Ireland, Ireland's Golden Age, The Struggle with the Norsemen and The Norman Conquest.

A passage on the Celts says that in the fourth century B.C. a second wave of Celtic migration poured over Italy, and that the Celts in this movement captured and destroyed the city of Rome. Breifne is said to have comprised, in its early extent, about the northern half of Co. Leitrim and the western half of Co. Cavan. The text says the Foreigners were commanded by Sir James Talbot of Malahide, that O'Neill was victorious, and that Talbot fell in the fight.
