About this book
Scandinavian Relations with Ireland During the Viking Period is by A. Walsh. The preface says this short study was written during the writer's tenure of a Travelling Studentship from the National University of Ireland. The preface says a glance at the bibliography shows that comparatively little has been written in English on this interesting period of our history. The preface says that modern Scandinavian scholars, Alexander Bugge, Marstrander and Vogt, have thrown a good deal of light on the subject.
The text says the forty years' rest terminated abruptly in 913, when several fleets arrived at Waterford and proceeded to ravage all Munster and Leinster. The text says that Sihtric entered Dublin and became king in 918. Chapter VI, Linguistic Influences, says that the large number of loan-words from Old Norse which occur in Old and Middle Irish indicate clearly the extent and character of Scandinavian influence in Ireland.
