About this book
Philoktetes, by Sophocles, is given here in a translation by Gregory McNamee. The introduction says Sophokles produced the Philoktetes in 408 B.C., three years before his death at the age of ninety. The introduction says Odysseus commands his lieutenant Neoptolemos, the teenaged son of the newly slain Achilles, to win Philoktetes over to the Greek cause by treachery.
The introduction says Neoptolemos learns through the course of the Philoktetes that he is simply unable, by virtue of his noble birth, to obey the roguish Odysseus's commands. Philoktetes asks whether it is not shameful that Odysseus thinks his words are wondrous enough to persuade him to let Odysseus cart him back to Troy, and says he would sooner trust his enemy, the viper that bit and crippled him at Chryse. One speech asks the person addressed to take the speaker home as promised and then to stay in Skyros.
