About this book

The play Deirdre of the Sorrows by J. M. Synge names Lavarcham as Deirdre’s nurse, Conchubor as High King of Ulster, and Naisi as Deirdre’s lover. The stage directions describe a neat and clean but bare room with a tapestry frame, a large press and a heavy oak chest.

Lavarcham says Deirdre is always roaming to gather flowers, nuts or sticks, and thinks she has a right not to interfere while Deirdre is gathering new life. Deirdre urges Fergus to go his own way, lest he perhaps say until his death that he brought Naisi and his brothers to a grave made by treachery.
