About this book
Phyllis is preparing for a difficult meeting with George Holland, the clergyman she has dismissed by letter after taking offense at his views of the Bible. Her father, Mr. Ayrton, answers her distress with polished sayings about marriage, morality and the risks of choosing a husband. She hopes to explain her decision without breaking down, while he delights in finding phrases for an intimate family crisis.
Frank Frankfort Moore builds this novel around conversations in which earnest convictions meet social wit. In another exchange, Holland and Phyllis discuss the explorer Mr. Courtland, the controversy surrounding his conduct and the boost it gives his book sales. Their conversation moves from missionary work to the public's regard for bravery, showing how reputation and moral judgment can pull in different directions. The interest for a reader today lies in these revealing arguments about belief, affection and public opinion.
