About this book
A granite mansion above the sea gives Claude's father a castle from which to assert his wishes. Gartram measures appearances and a prospective husband in money, and insists that his quarry workers must be firmly ruled. Claude asks him to speak more gently, then sets out through the glens with Mary Dillon, whose teasing about love alternates with painful doubts about her own prospects. Their affectionate conversation puts a warmer household relationship beside Gartram's demands.
George Manville Fenn combines this family friction with courtship and suspense. Christopher Lisle's later approach to the house involves a moonlit gully, a crossing of the moat and a climb through ivy into familiar gardens. His memories of Claude give the physical obstacles a personal meaning. Readers interested in romance shaped by wealth and parental authority will find those pressures expressed through lively dialogue and the coastal setting.
