About this book
A book by Ernest G. Martin carries the subtitle The Science of the Body. The text says we all know that our sense organs, the eyes, ears, nose, and finger tips are what we depend on for telling us where food is to be found. The text says that in ourselves and in almost all other animals the space between the eyes and the leg muscles is bridged by special machinery, familiar under the name of the nervous system.
The text says acute (inflammatory) rheumatism is not only an extremely painful condition, but is very likely to leave serious after-effects, as for example injured heart valves. The text says infected tonsils are looked after not simply because they bring about sore throat now and then, but even more because of the poison which they are likely to send through the body. The text imagines two persons side by side, one of whom had only large-letter determiners in his chromosomes and the other only small, who would have the same general human make-up.
