About this book
The book is titled Picturesque Sketches of London, Past and Present. The text says that even until within the last half century the wheels of the great water-works first erected by Peter the Dutchman continued to moan and groan, and splash and dash. The text describes a narrow, dark, and dangerous gloomy old street that, hung between the water and the sky, went stretching across the broad bosom of the Thames.
The text exclaims how few, except they are lovers of history, know or care any thing about Edward VI. The text mentions a belt, yellow stockings, and clerkly band worn by the unmonk-like young gentry, who have succeeded the old Grey-Friars. The text says that we have often seen a green-looking countryman peeping through the palisades in Newgate-street, while the boys have been at play in the open space before the hall. The text describes little darlings who gathered the white dead-nettle, the ox-eye, and red poppy, thought such were beautiful flowers, and could only sob and weep when they were beaten.
