About this book

A seat beside the stage at a Padua theatre gives William Dean Howells his opening comparison for Venice: living there lets him see the workings behind its celebrated image. In this travel account, he draws on three years in the city to describe canals, streets, theatres, meals, household arrangements and holidays. His attention moves between daily customs and the stories attached to well-known landmarks, including the Bridge of Sighs and the Ducal Palace.

Published in 1867, the second edition adds a chapter on commerce and expands the discussion of national holidays. Historical passages examine Venice's dealings with papal authority, while a visit to ground associated with the friar Sarpi prompts reflection on what a famous place actually makes a visitor feel. Readers interested in the city's social history will find both practical observations and a questioning account of how literary expectations shape travel.
