About this book
Pioneers of the Old Southwest, by Constance Lindsay Skinner, is a chronicle of the dark and bloody ground, and forms Volume 18 of the Chronicles of America Series. The acknowledgment says the narrative is founded largely on original sources, such as the writings and journals of pioneers and contemporary observers like Doddridge and Adair, and on the public documents of the period as printed in the Colonial Records and in the American Archives.
The text says the Royal Governor, Josiah Martin, knew that Highland arms would soon be needed by His Majesty, and would not let the Gaels proceed after their landing until they had bound themselves by oath to support the Government of King George. The text describes petitioners of the Regulation asking that judges and clerks be given salaries instead of perquisites and fees, and petitioning for repeal of the act prohibiting dissenting ministers from celebrating the rites of matrimony. The text names an agitator, Hermon Husband, under whose sway the Regulators were during their career of violence.
