About this book
Breaking the Wilderness is by Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh. A picture caption titled The Sierra Blanca gives Blanca Peak as 14,390 feet and Baldy Peak as 14,176 feet, and says Blanca Peak is the Third Highest in Colorado. The text says that in some portions of the South-west cotton was cultivated and woven into blankets and garments long before the white man came, and that the Pueblo men did the weaving in that division.
The text says it was a sorry day when the trader brought them alcohol, and that by its use tribes were degraded, swindled, beggared. The text calls the battle of Pierre's Hole one about which much has been written. The text says the moment buffalo were first sighted by the anxious caravan a joyful cry went up, equivalent, as Irving says, to the cry of “A sail, a sail!” at sea.
