About this book

A physician's consulting room becomes a place of mystery for Pip and Pipette, two children who give unfamiliar medical objects names of their own. Ian Hay opens this novel with their curiosity, misunderstandings and dealings with the household servants. Cook takes charge of their daily care, while their busy father struggles with grief and the distance that has grown between him and his children.

As Pip grows older, the family's difficulties become more serious. He tells his father that medical studies do not suit him, just as Dr. Wilmot reveals financial trouble and uncertain health. The book's subjects also include school life, cricket, golf and young love. Its appeal lies in the change from small childhood troubles to the demands of adulthood, with family conversations showing how affection and disappointment can occupy the same room.
