About this book

A quarrel over a card game introduces the Vereker siblings and the authority of their eldest sister, Daphne. Nicky bends the rules of Happy Families, Stiffy accepts his losses, and Daphne decides the penalty. Ian Hay builds this English family novel around quick exchanges and the competing temperaments of a lively rectory household. At nineteen, Daphne already has responsibility for keeping her younger brothers and sisters in order.

Marriage brings Daphne a different set of domestic pressures. At Belton, she enjoys the countryside but clashes with her husband, Jack, over the running of their wealthy household. She remembers the satisfaction of stretching the family budget, while his careful criticism leaves her feeling slighted. The contrast between her earlier responsibilities and her married life gives readers interested in social customs a close view of how money, pride and expectations can complicate everyday affection.
