About this book
A neglected farmhouse kitchen becomes the starting point for an inquiry in Susan Glaspell's collection of four plays. In Trifles, a county attorney, a sheriff and a neighboring farmer discuss John Wright's death while Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale stand nearby. Unwashed pans, frozen preserves and unfinished chores draw comments from the visitors, bringing the work and isolation of farm women into the conversation. The scene makes ordinary household objects matter alongside official testimony.
The volume also includes The Outside, The Verge and Inheritors. In The Verge, Claire and Tom have an uneasy exchange about love, beauty and the desire to move beyond familiar limits. Glaspell uses pauses, gestures and abrupt changes of feeling to give those ideas a physical presence on the page. Readers interested in American drama can study how her dialogue turns domestic spaces and intimate conversations into arguments about understanding another person's life.
