About this book
Joseph I. Lawrence's story is set partly at the table of Wistaria Lodge, a boarding house run by Miss Maria Bascom. She wants Adolph to turn off the jazz and tune the radio to WXL, thirty-three on the dial, while Henry Caddock, dean of the house, suggests simply snapping off the switch. Miss Bascom reminds the boarders of a vote that lets one listener keep the set on until eleven o'clock.
WXL is the local station in Port Cardinal, and the hostess tells a new boarder, Miss Stark, that two of its staff artists live in the house: Dora Perkins, who plays piano, and Douglas Raymond, a baritone. Kitty Granby, a stenographer at the First National Bank, says goodbye to Douglas as he leaves with Dora. In another scene Dora tells Douglas that an artist needs sympathy and understanding, and he would rather not talk about Kitty. A studio manager named Magnus comes in and speaks sharply.
