About this book
The Torrent (Entre Naranjos) is a work by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. The book is translated from the Spanish by Isaac Goldberg and Arthur Livingston, 1921. A character named Doña Bernarda tells the young deputy that his friends are waiting for him at the Club and will want to hear all his stories about life in Madrid.
A garden has orange-trees stretched in rows along broad straight walks of red earth, where Rafael could hear the sound of a piano and a soft, timid voice, as if the song were meant for the singer alone. The text describes a blonde beauty, svelte, somewhat thin, taller than her years, gazing with astonishment at the cold, bustling city, so different from the warm orchards of her childhood home. The Chamber falls silent as a faint voice speaks of fields that could continue to perish of drought while nearby rivers continued to pour their unutilized waters into the sea.
