About this book
This is part of a four-volume set of the complete works of Plotinos, in chronological order and grouped in four periods, by Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie, with a biography by Porphyry, Eunapius and Suidas, commentary by Porphyry, illustrations by Jamblichus and Ammonius, studies and an index. The transcriber's notes mention cross-reference lists in the first 39 pages.
A biographical passage names disciples of Plotinos, among them the senators Marcellus, Orontius, Sabinillus and Rogatianus, Serapion of Alexandria, and Porphyry of Tyre, whom Plotinos admitted to his circle of intimate friends, and says that weak eyesight made rereading his own writing painful. Philosophical passages discuss essence, stability and Unity, and say that Unity cannot be defined and can only be referred to through our feelings. Numbered notes cite Plato's Cratylos and Aristotle.
