About this book
The book gathers poems by Matthew Arnold in a new and complete edition, and its contents list includes the narrative poems Sohrab and Rustum and The Sick King in Bokhara. One poem tells of the Duchess Marguerite, whose youth in Vienna, by the Danube, was beguiled by feast and dance; she never sorrowed till that hour, and from then she never smiled. The verse also speaks of a lonely church, unfinished, which the Duchess Maud began.
A speaker in a further poem says that will and energy, though rare, are yet far, far less rare than love. A stanza says that we school our manners and act our parts, but that He, who sees us through and through, knows that the bent of both our hearts was to be gentle, tranquil, true. A vision in verse urges that what still of strength is left be employed to help attain one common wave of thought and joy lifting mankind again.
