About this book

The Listeners and Other Poems is by Walter de la Mare. The contents list poems titled The Three Cherry Trees, Old Susan, Old Ben, Miss Loo, The Tailor and The Scarecrow. In Old Susan, when Susan's work is done she sits with one fat guttering candle lit and the window opened wide, and reads with a thumb to keep her place.

In Old Ben, Ben Thistlewaite is sad, now his day is done and his children are far away, and he sits beneath his jasmined porch with his stick between his knees. A verse says that names may be writ and mounds rise, purporting Here be bones, but that churchyard is empty of all save stones. In Arabia, the Princes ride at noon among the verdurous vales and thickets, under the ghost of the moon.
