About this book
Ira Mayhew's Popular Education is addressed on its title page to parents and teachers and to young persons of both sexes. It was prepared and published in 1850 under a resolution of a legislature, and the front matter prints a letter dated at Lansing on February 27, 1849, telling Mayhew, addressed as Superintendent of Public Instruction, that the House of Representatives had adopted a preamble and resolution. A caption names the Free Academy, New York, with a pointer to page 386.
One passage on the laws of health quotes Dr. Combe on the value of knowing how the body works. Another treats the supposed influence of the moon on timber and planting, citing experiments and observations. The index points to topics such as the sense of hearing, habits, the hot-bed system of education, a house of refuge and an address by Horace Greeley on free schools.
