The preface asks whether pupils should begin framing simple generalizations about composition before the overcrowded last year of high school, rather than leaving the principles until that year. The preface gives a student's questions about choosing theme topics, deciding how much to put into a sentence and understanding why a particular word is considered bad usage.
The discussion of dictionaries advises the reader to look up a word when its present meaning or pronunciation is doubtful, or when its history arouses curiosity. The dictionary advice recommends owning an abridged dictionary, preferably with fewer abridgments, while frequently consulting unabridged books as well.
