About this book

Reviewers and their rules come under scrutiny before the writers they usually judge. In this 1919 collection of essays, H. L. Mencken examines rival approaches to criticism, including moral instruction, formal standards and psychological interpretation. His discussion of J. E. Spingarn considers the claim that a critic should judge a work through its maker's aims. The opening turns disagreements about literature into an argument about the habits and responsibilities of reviewing.

The contents range across individual authors, the new poetry movement, magazines and etiquette. In a later passage, Mencken challenges an earlier assessment of Robert W. Chambers by examining dialogue and the commercial fiction it represents. His attention moves between broad theories and particular sentences, showing how a literary reputation can become a subject of dispute. Readers interested in the history of criticism will find outspoken judgments that invite close examination of the standards behind them.
