About this book
After decades of trying to share other readers' admiration for Shakespeare, Leo Tolstoy sets out the reasons for his resistance. This 1906 critical essay begins with his account of repeated readings in several languages, then turns to King Lear as a test case. He places celebrated critics' praise beside his own examination of the play's dialogue, characters and dramatic construction, arguing that a strong reputation cannot substitute for convincing artistic work.
The discussion reaches beyond the theatre into the making of public opinion. Tolstoy describes a cycle in which newspapers and their audiences magnify each other's interest until an accepted judgment becomes difficult to challenge. The volume also includes Ernest Crosby's study of Shakespeare's treatment of working people and a letter from Bernard Shaw. Readers interested in literary disagreement will find a forceful argument about taste, authority and the standards used to judge a play.
