About this book
I. A. Richards writes here about literary criticism and the value of the arts. The first pages quote press reviews of the book, which call it scientific and psychological and praise its clear, few terms.
In one passage he takes up a reviewer's complaint about a stage performance of Shelley's The Cenci and asks what readers look for in tragedy, with a reference to Aristotle. Another passage names The Pilgrim's Progress, Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels, and raises the question whether a work that appeals to all kinds of readers is for that reason greater. A further passage argues that criticism needs a general theory of value, one that does not leave the statement 'this is good, that bad' vague or arbitrary.
