About this book
Prize Orations of the Intercollegiate Peace Association carries a foreword by Charles F. Thwing. The text pictures the student saying I will, therefore I can, and also I can, therefore I will. The text says that perhaps, furthermore, the cause makes its most impressive appeal to the collegian in its internationalism, or interpatriotism. The text says the German students have fought for their Fatherland and also for the liberal sentiments of their own land against reactionary movements, as in 1848.
A speaker asks what will be arbitrated, and answers Every case in which a favorable award is assured us, and every case that does not rouse our anger. A speaker calls a treaty with an elastic exception like this a farcical sham and a delusion. A speaker says that if we are to have international arbitration in the near future, we must have it in spite of this spirit of war rather than by destroying the spirit.
