About this book
Psychopathology of Everyday Life is by Professor Dr. Sigmund Freud, in an authorized English edition with an introduction by A. A. Brill. The introduction says Professor Freud developed his system of psychoanalysis while studying the so-called border-line cases of mental diseases, such as hysteria and compulsion neurosis.
The writer tells of carrying a cane with a silver handle, and of getting rid of it when it broke after he used the handle to angle for the leg of one of his children. The text says the indifference with which we accept the resulting damage in all these cases may certainly be taken as evidence for the existence of an unconscious purpose. One example describes a man who reproached himself for a technical error in the psychoanalysis of a patient and who stumbled in the street, forgot his pocket-book at home, and was a penny short in his car fare.
