About this book

One lost dollar sends Quinby Graham to a free New Year's Eve dance, where his eagerness for company outruns the caution his recovery demands. After six months in hospitals, the wounded soldier welcomes the music, lights and chance to meet a young woman whose officer escort refuses to dance. Their encounter opens a novel about courtship and a veteran's return to civilian life, told with comic attention to pride, impulsive decisions and social manners.

Later, Quin sets himself an ambitious programme of work and education, hoping to become worthy of Eleanor. Factory duties, university classes, pronunciation lessons and advice about clothes all compete for his time. His friendships bring both encouragement and reminders to soften his noisy enthusiasm.
