About this book
At a crowded ball in nineteenth-century England, Addie Armstrong enjoys the dancing while her husband watches with more complicated feelings. Tom values his wife's pride and self-respect, yet resents the power she has over his affections. Mrs. Gordon Smythies sets the pleasures of society beside this private struggle, giving a scene of music and bright rooms an undercurrent of hurt and uncertainty.
Pauline Lefroy brings another kind of energy to the evening. Initially timid, she soon attracts eager partners and repeatedly dances with a young squire. Addie worries about ballroom propriety, while Tom treats Pauline's enjoyment more indulgently. These exchanges place marriage, family expectations and social manners at the center of the novel. Readers interested in domestic romance can follow the tension between outward courtesy and inward resentment, with small gestures and conversations carrying much of the emotional weight.
