About this book
Raeburn, 1756-1823, is by J. L. Caw and is illustrated with eight reproductions in colour. A frontispiece caption says of Charles Hay, "The Mighty," as he was called, that his exploits "have become traditions of the Parliament House," and that the picture "dates from about 1807."
The text says that "Time brings its revenges" and that "of late years Raeburn has taken a place in the very front rank of British painters." Raeburn "had lived and painted solely in Scotland", and Scottish art, "so long as it remains at home, has little interest for London". Prices for his pictures "have risen steadily from the very modest sums of twenty years ago until fine pictures by him fetch as much as representative specimens of Reynolds and Gainsborough." Arrived back in Edinburgh in 1787, Raeburn took a studio in the new town, and the text says he "seems to have used his stay in Italy principally to widen his technical experience."
