About this book
Scottish family history provides the starting point for W. G. Collingwood's account of John Ruskin, the English author born in London in 1819. The opening traces ancestors, education, family letters and the commercial career of Ruskin's father. Collingwood writes from a long association with his subject, beginning as a pupil in 1872 and continuing as a visitor, assistant and neighbour. His preface explains how later revisions gave more space to the life itself.
The chapters follow Ruskin from youthful poetry through art criticism to teaching and wider questions of social life. Modern Painters, The Seven Lamps and Stones of Venice mark stages in that development. A later passage connects his work at the Working Men's College with the loss of his father and the family's generous support of art and charities. Readers interested in the personal circumstances behind Ruskin's ideas will find domestic detail alongside the record of his public work.
