About this book
Railway Rates: English and Foreign is by James Grierson, general manager of the Great Western Railway. The preface says a part of the information upon which these observations are founded was obtained for the writer’s own guidance, in considering the complaints as to Railway rates and the comparisons between railways in the United Kingdom and abroad. The text says that charging equal mileage rates, always condemned by competent judges, is still, in some form, very often brought forward.
The text says that, far from being really equitable, equal mileage rates would often act most unfairly. The text says an allowance must be made to cover the cost of specially expensive undertakings, such as the Runcorn, Tay and Forth Bridges. The text says that in Germany and Holland an effort has been made to adopt the mileage system.
