About this book
Turkey, the Great Powers, and the Bagdad Railway carries the subtitle A Study in Imperialism. The account describes manufactures, except for some luxuries of incomparable craftsmanship, struggling to compete even in the Ottoman Empire with cheaper machine-made goods from Europe. The discussion says that adopting European methods was for a time impracticable, with no mobile fund of capital and even Young Turks unable to furnish the necessary technical skill.
The account of natural resources describes the Sultan’s Asiatic dominions as rich in raw materials, fuel, and agricultural possibilities. A quoted statement about trade seeks increased imports of raw materials into the United States and increased exports of manufactured articles to Turkey.
