Edmund Gosse traces Walter Raleigh's life from a Devonshire farmhouse to the uneasy world of royal service. Published in 1886, this biography begins with family connections, religious divisions and the uncertain record of Raleigh's youth. Gosse draws on letters, deeds and earlier studies, sometimes disputing another writer's dates or refusing to accept a story for which he finds little support. His attention to such gaps makes the process of reconstructing a life part of the reading.
At the change from Elizabeth's reign to that of James I, Raleigh must seek renewed appointments from a king who receives him coolly. His position at court and even his London home come under pressure. Voyages to Guiana, confinement in the Tower and a trial at Winchester give later chapters their subjects. Readers interested in early modern Britain can follow how family influence, reputation and access to a monarch shape one man's prospects.
