About this book
Sir Walter Ralegh: A Biography is by William Stebbing, in a reissue of 1899 with a frontispiece and a list of authorities. The contents give chapters on his genealogy, his search for a career from 1552 to 1581, royal favour, Virginia, the poet, The Revenge in September 1591 and his time in the Tower. The list of authorities cites works such as Schomburgk's edition of Ralegh's Discovery of the Empire of Guiana, with page references.
In one passage Cecil imagines that Ralegh had asked Cobham for a retractation, and Ralegh manages to have a letter in or fastened to an apple thrown in at Cobham's window in Wardrobe tower. In another, an apology appears with the authority of the Crown on November 27, with James supplying part of its contents, as Bacon wrote to Villiers, and Naunton and Yelverton helping with the composition.
