About this book
Old business partners come first in John D. Rockefeller's recollections, published in 1909. He remembers John D. Archbold announcing his preferred oil price beside his name in a hotel register, then turns to the patience and argument needed to reach decisions among strong personalities. These informal memories connect individual friendships with the growth of Standard Oil. Rockefeller credits his associates with much of the company's work and explains why he has chosen to speak publicly about disputed events.
The account also gives his own version of the purchase of the Backus Oil Company's property, including the negotiations involving Mrs. Backus and the complaint she sent after the sale. Chapters on business principles, giving and cooperative charity widen the book beyond memories of the oil trade. Readers interested in American business history can examine how Rockefeller presents his conduct, his partners and his responsibilities. The personal voice makes the book useful as a statement of his perspective on commerce and philanthropy.
