About this book
Tea and conversation give Frances Power Cobbe's recollections of public life a personal setting. In her autobiography, she remembers Jowett's visits, his advice to keep writing and his reflections on religious belief. She describes how he secured support for a petition she wrote in 1876 concerning experiments on living animals. These memories lead into her scrutiny of the authority granted to scientific opinion when moral decisions are at stake.
The 1904 edition includes an introduction by Blanche Atkinson, who explains how her encouragement helped the memoir take shape through a review of old letters and records. Her account also follows Cobbe's friendship with Mary Lloyd, her hospitality and her continued work for animal protection.
