About this book
Recollections of Thirty-nine Years in the Army by Charles Alexander Gordon is a personal narrative whose title page lists campaigns and a siege. The account of a river journey describes a boat catching fire and losing its occupants' kits and belongings, although the means of their escape remained unknown. The journey also includes several deaths from cholera and a collision between boats that caused considerable damage.
The narrator illustrates administrative red tape with a defective military hospital water-pipe whose interrupted supply greatly inconvenienced the sick. The recruiting discussion considers short service at home and long service for India, with some participants calculating that the latter scheme would cost less, including pensions.
