About this book
Reels and Spindles is a story of mill life by Evelyn Raymond, illustrated by Frank T. Merrill. Its preface is about Amy Kaye, who chose a course she thought right and followed it with a single purpose.
In one passage a girl stands in the yard of the Crawford carpet mill, listening to the beat of the engines and looking at the many windows. A man asks if he can help, glances toward a sign reading No Admittance, and she explains that a lad called Bony brought her there after she was lost on the river bank. In another passage Amy speaks of the two dollars she will earn and the oatmeal they will buy, while Cleena has a pinafore and a mid-day lunch ready for her. Another passage shows a man named Hallam noticing a slight sound, a sharp smell and a tiny creeping spark in the mill.
