About this book
Enlisting in September 1862, Joseph W. Grant joined the Twelfth Rhode Island Volunteers as a private in Company F. His account, drawn from a journal kept during the campaign, begins with the regiment's organization at Providence and its departure toward Washington. Trains, steamers, crowded stations and welcoming spectators fill the early pages, alongside a New England soldier's observations of farms, towns and unfamiliar landscapes.
At Newport News, Grant turns his attention to the practical arrangements of camp: parade grounds, barrel wells, washing ditches and nearby woods that supply fuel. He also records the visible remains of naval vessels in the bay. Written for comrades who had been unable to keep their own records, this personal narrative offers readers interested in the American Civil War a close view of military movement and the ordinary conditions of a volunteer's service.
