About this book
Oscar Wilde turns a review of a cookery book into an argument about art, appetite and the failings of the English kitchen. His comments on risotto, salads and macaroni show how readily a practical subject becomes material for literary criticism and comedy. Collected in this 1908 volume, the pieces address books and theatre, with poetry and dramatic writing among the subjects under discussion.
The range of his judgments matters as much as the jokes. When considering verse drama, Wilde asks how a work intended for reading can convey action, thought and feeling without the resources of a stage. He weighs psychological detail against the loss of narrative description, and notices what a brief stage direction cannot achieve on the page. Readers interested in criticism can follow him testing artistic principles against particular works, from the presentation of food to the handling of poetic speech.
