About this book
Discourses on Satire and on Epic Poetry is by John Dryden. The introduction says Dryden’s discourses upon Satire and Epic Poetry belong to the latter years of his life, and represent maturer thought than is to be found in his Essay of Dramatic Poesie. The introduction says the Essay of Dramatic Poesie, published in 1667, draws its chief interest from the time when it was written.
The writer addresses a lord, saying It is a general complaint against your lordship, and I must have leave to upbraid you with it, that, because you need not write, you will not. Of one kind of satire the writer says Here is the majesty of the heroic finely mixed with the venom of the other. The writer asks leave to make the excuse of Boccace, who, when he was upbraided that some of his novels had not the spirit of the rest, returned this answer.
