Convinced that Jeeves has been getting too much credit lately, Bertie Wooster decides to run his friends’ romantic troubles himself, with predictably ruinous results. At his Aunt Dahlia’s country house he sets out to help the shy, newt-obsessed Gussie Fink-Nottle win Madeline Bassett, mend a lovers’ quarrel, and soothe a temperamental French chef, and manages instead to tangle every thread into knots. The centrepiece, a tipsy Gussie handing out prizes at Market Snodsbury Grammar School, is among the funniest scenes Wodehouse ever wrote.
