About this book
Rollo's parents have decided to leave their farms for New York, where Society promises plenty of encounters with people they hardly know. For a boy of ten or eleven, the change begins amid familiar things, including a souvenir clam-shell, while the hired man Jonas receives a new role as his father's secretary. George S. Chappell turns the language of children's instruction toward a world of social calls and carefully explained manners.
The narrator keeps offering moral lessons as Rollo learns what adults do after dark. An evening with Uncle George and Mr. Ross includes dancing and ends with the boy reaching home at dawn. Another invitation points toward Greenwich Village and its artists, prompted by Rollo's admiration for a painted shell. Written as a parody of Jacob Abbott, the book lets the contrast between earnest advice and grown-up behavior carry its humor.
