At the old family manor of Rosmersholm, Johannes Rosmer has quietly abandoned the faith he once preached and drifted toward radical politics, encouraged by Rebecca West, the clever woman who shares his home. But the house still feels the weight of his wife Beata, who drowned herself in the mill-race, and the closer Rosmer and Rebecca come to admitting what they mean to each other, the heavier that guilt grows. Ibsen builds this 1886 tragedy from things left unsaid, letting old secrets and buried motives surface until the past claims its price.
