About this book

A sunny morning outside a coastal bath hotel finds the sculptor Arnold Rubek and his wife Maia talking across a widening gap. She feels oppressed by the stillness of their return home, while he admits that years abroad have altered his relation to familiar surroundings. Their comfortable houses and polished social life sit uneasily beside the weariness that enters their conversation.

Henrik Ibsen gives this three-act play the designation of a dramatic epilogue. Its setting moves from the coast to a health resort high in the mountains, and its dialogue presses on questions of companionship, artistic purpose and passing time. Rubek seeks someone who can share his striving, while Maia challenges the terms of their life together. The English translation offers readers a concentrated domestic drama in which pauses, gestures and apparently ordinary remarks expose deeply felt dissatisfaction.
