Inspired by Swiss Family Robinson, she sees adventure in the yard while her mother is ill and the adults around her struggle to keep pace with her schemes. Her lively imagination comes with a quick temper and a habit of putting her own wishes first.
School brings a different set of challenges in this children's novel about conduct, friendship and family care. Ruby arrives at boarding school with Aunt Emma, a teacher with whom she will share a room. Another new pupil, Maude, resents Ruby's larger quarters and demands gifts to make her own stay acceptable. The contrast between the girls gives readers a close view of childish envy and the patient work of teaching consideration. Domestic details and direct moral commentary make the story useful for exploring older ideas about bringing up children.
