About this book
Rural Hygiene is by Henry N. Ogden, C.E., professor of sanitary engineering in the College of Civil Engineering, Cornell University. The preface says that its pages represent an attempt to put before the rural population a systematic treatment of those special subjects included in what is popularly known as Hygiene. Basing the comparison on the statistics of the Census Office of the United States, the text finds that at present the difference in the death-rates from typhoid fever in cities and in rural districts is very small.
The text says that Nathan Strauss, of New York City, by supplying the poor with milk properly heated so as to destroy the bacteria which may have been introduced by careless handling, has also saved hundreds of thousands of children from premature death. The text cites a provision that no state shall make or enforce any law which shall deprive any person of property without due process of law.
